Fire on the Canastra

Reflections about the fire in the Cerrado.

(Reflexões sobre o fogo no Cerrado - ICMBio, 2018).

In the cerrado, the action of fire precedes human presence and has been recorded for at least 11 thousand years. Therefore, before the fire was started by human hands, it already arose from natural causes (for example: by lightning at the beginning of the rainy season). Although fire is considered an important ecological factor in this biome, already associated, for example, with the germination and flowering of certain plants and the availability of food resources to countless fauna representatives, the misuse of fire (accidental or criminal burns) is great damage to regional biodiversity, in particular, to protected areas, such as the Serra da Canastra National Park.
